A three-day workshop on Financing Renewable Energy in Small Island Developing States was organized in Nadi, Fiji, from 1 to 3 December, 2016. It was a part of the activities conducted in India in FY2016 under the “Technology Assessment” project, which is a project funded by the Ministry of Environment, Japan (MOEJ) and commissioned to the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES).
The workshop included deliberation sessions which focused on the core elements and prerequisites of a bankable proposal and the key investment criteria of multilateral financial institutions. It included also a breakout sessions which addressed the need for capacity building and energy efficient transport from a regional perspective. Last but not the least, it included group discussion sessions which explored non-traditional ways to access climate finance as well as innovative and strategic ways of using financial risk mitigation instruments and risk-sharing facilities.
18 delegates from Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs) and 22 representatives of international and regional organisations, multilateral financial institutions and development agencies participated the event.
The ultimate objective of the workshop was to initiate an in-depth discussion on renewable energy financing.
An outcome document was developed highlighting the challenges, the lessons learned and the way forward for financing renewable energy and energy efficiency projects in the Pacific region.
