Considerations on Environmental Impact Assessment of Trade Agreements in the Asia Pacific

In APEC Capacity Building Workshop on Environmental Provisions in FTAs/RTAs 12 September 2017 (Beijing, China)

This presentation emphasizes the importance of assessing not only the environmental impacts, but also the broader sustainability impacts and linkages to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of recent efforts to negotiate trade agreements in the Asia Pacific region. Other questions to be addressed include who should conduct those assessments, when they should be conducted, the process, and their scope and methods. These questions need to be considered in light of the changing focus of trade negotiations themselves, which have moved beyond discussions of traditional trade barriers to a broader range of topics such as investment, intellectual property, labor and environmental standards, and investor-state dispute resolution.
